Marshall's (Newbury) LTA Junior Tournament 2005.
This annual five-day event was again blessed with good weather throughout the week. The first Monday was action packed with some 60 matches being played in the boys 10 and under. Mikey Puttick from Ramsbury, a winner from last year was too strong and experienced and won the final in style against Ross Catlin from Totally Tennis.
There was only a small group of players contesting the 11 and under event, and James Horn from Brimpton won both his matches to receive first prize.
Rishi Shah from South Hampstead at only 11 years old had a comfortable win over Alex Eatough from Caversham 6-1,6-2 in the final of the boys under 12. He then went on to compete well in the 14 and under event, not only reaching the semi-finals but also giving the eventual winner, Edward Sweet, his toughest match. Edward from Caversham then went on to defeat Alex Trill in the final 6-1, 6-2. In earlier rounds Jonathan Lamport had a good run winning two successive matches in deciding set tiebreaks before going out to Eatough, again in the deciding set tiebreak.
It was slightly disappointing that only 7 girls entered the 14 and under event. The final was contested well by two Totally Tennis players. Dominique Gilbert eventually overcoming Aimee Paterson 6-4, 6-4.
Tournament referee Peter Smith used his experience to good effect and ensured the tournament ran smoothly. Steve Thompson presented the prizes and thanked sponsors Marshalls (Newbury) Peugeot dealers, Newbury Building Society and Melville Burbage insurance. Peter Also awarded the Melville Burbage cup to Merin Shah for his fair play and sportsmanship on court.

Smart Golf Simulator
This new facility is now up and running and is located next to our bistro bar. Players can get refreshing drinks and snacks before they get to the eighteenth.
Smart Golf has become the world’s most popular golf simulator with players being able to drive, chip and putt on some 40 of the most famous golf courses (inc St Andrews, Valderama, Pebble Beach & The Belfry). It provides players with a challenging and compulsive form of entertainment- the closest thing to a real game of golf. The flight of the ball through the air is detected, measured and projected onto the screen by the unique computerised tracking system.
Having selected your course, using your own clubs, you hit the ball into a wall size image; the computer then takes over and represents the position the ball has landed and redraws the screen to show you your next shot.
Smart Golf is fascinating, addictive, superbly realistic and has tremendous appeal for players of all ages and abilities. For further information, prices and bookings, ring Reception. Open to non-members.
The screen for the simulator is 10 foot square and when golf is not being played members and guests are able to watch live televised sporting events.

Tennis
Newbury Leagues
Our teams ended the season with some variable results in the summer leagues. Our mens' first team came 4th in division 1. Had we been able to field our top team consistently we would undoubtably have been at or near the top, but on too many occasions we were forced to use players from our 2nd and 3rd teams. The 2nd team also in division 1 were always going to struggle in this league. Having done really well in the previous season to get promoted the jump up in standard was just too much, as Norwich found last season in the Premiership. Although losing all their matches their were some creditable performances and a good team spirit throughout. Our 3rd team seems to still lack experience, and lost numerous matches by 5 rubbers to 4, ending up unluckily 2nd from bottom in division 2. Our ladies teams fared better. The 1st team came 3rd in division 1, and congratulations to our 2nd teamwho won the 2nd division outright. our 3rd ladies team also did well and should get promotion from the 5th division. Our mixed team came a creditable 2nd in division 1, only two points behind the eventual winning team. Click here for results
Berkshire Leagues
Although these are still running we are doing well in all of them and most of our teams are lying top of their respective divisions with a few matches still to play. Our Mens Over 45's team having been promoted to the 2nd division last season, have once again swept all before them, winning all their matches, and will now gain promotion to the 1st division.www.ndlta.org.uk
Squash
The Finals of the Club Tournament saw Stephen Dodridge (already holder of the Over 35 title) win the title for the 13th time by defeating Steve Brackley in an exciting and well-contested match.
In the Brian Willis Trophy, Roger Yeoman had beaten David Giles. Barry Willis had won the Micro Cup by defeating Wendy Merrell.
